Language and medicine

On September 29, the Languages Department of West Kazakhstan’s Marat Ospanov Medical University hosted a round table titled “Language and Medicine.” This event brought together linguists, individuals with doctoral degrees in philology and pedagogy from various higher education institutions. The round table served as a platform for in-depth discussions on contemporary linguistic issues. It also extended its invitation to educators responsible for practical training within higher education institutions and welcomed all individuals interested in current language-related matters.

The round table aimed to draw colleagues’ attention to the language of science, specifically the language of medicine and the intricacies of medical terminology.

The event commenced with opening remarks from Abilov Talgar Satybaevich, an Associate Professor and a Candidate of Medical Sciences, who serves as the Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine. He introduced intriguing insights into the nuances of medical language in the state language, the adaptability of industry-specific terminology, and its roots tracing back to ancient Latin. Subsequently, the discussion continued under the guidance of Dr. Rakhiev Roman Rakhiuly, a prominent linguist and veteran, who currently chairs the Aktobe regional branch of the International Society “Kazakh Language.” Dr. Rakhiuly emphasized that there are no insurmountable barriers for those committed to mastering the language.

During the round table, the key speakers were experienced teachers, such as Seipenova Aniya Nurmukhanbetovna – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of General Medical Practice with a report “The Role of the Medical Worker in the Development of Communicative Competence”; Abdullina Lida Nurlybaevna – senior lecturer of the Department of Languages, master of Kazakh language and literature on the topic “The problem of unifying the terms of the Kazakh language in the field of medicine”; Egizbaeva Lyazzat Erzhanovna – senior lecturer, doctoral student at Aktobe Regional University named after K. Zhubanov on the topic “Use of medical terms and concepts in English”; Sapakhova Zhaniya Aituganovna – teacher of the Department of Languages, Master of Russian Language and Literature with a report “Russian language in the development of medical professionalism”; Zhubanazarova Kalamkas Asylbaevna – senior lecturer at the Department of Languages ​​with the topic of the report “The role of speech ethics of the Russian language in the education of a medical worker.”

These reports initiated discussions on various topics – the role of the state language in the field of medicine, the inconsistency of many medical terms, the communicative competence of medical workers among all round table participants. The working languages ​​were both Kazakh and Russian.

At the end of the speech, Mustoapova Altyngul Sarsenovna, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Head of the Languages Department, expressed gratitude to the participants of the round table and presented certificates to the guests.
