History of creation
The Department of Faculty Pediatrics with a course in propaedeutics of childhood diseases was founded in 1975.
The organizer and first head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, U. B. Baltaev
From 1991 to 2010, the department was headed by Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Economics, Doctor of Medical Sciences, TusupkalievBalashTusupkalievich. His contribution to the development of teaching in the Kazakh language is invaluable. Under his leadership, methodological recommendations and manuals were developed in Russian and Kazakh languages. Tusupkaliev B.T. prepared scientific and pedagogical personnel: Doctor of Medical Sciences – 1, Candidate of Medical Sciences – 3, Master – 1; Ph.D. – 1, residents in the specialty “Neonatology” more than 60.
Since 2010, the Department of Children Diseases No. 1 with neonatology has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, «Excellent Student» of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.K. Zhumalina.

Activity
Pedagogical and methodological activities
The main directions of the department’s work are training 4th year students of the Faculty of General Medicine, from 2022-23, the Faculty of Military Medicine in the discipline “Children’s Diseases”, 3rd year students of the Faculty of General Medicine in the discipline “Propaedeutics of Childhood Diseases”, training of residents in the specialty “Neonatology”, advanced training of pediatricians, neonatologists, gastroenterologists. To achieve this goal, educational, methodological, scientific, clinical and educational work is carried out.
Scientific activity:
Fundamental scientific research is carried out in the main areas of research work of the department.
The results of research work are published in scientific publications, peer-reviewed in the Scopus, Web of Sciences (Q1, Q2, Q3), KKSON databases; in international and republican collections of scientific and practical conferences and seminars.
Medical activities:
All employees of the department carry out medical and diagnostic activities in the departments of the Multidisciplinary City Children’s Hospital assigned to them, constantly conduct medical work, provide advisory assistance not only in the base institution, but also in maternity hospitals, city clinics, and actively provide advisory assistance in the regions of Western Kazakhstan. Five employees have the highest medical qualification category. The head and professor of the department conduct clinical examinations of patients and provide advisory assistance. All department employees review medical histories of deceased children. New diagnostic and treatment methods are being introduced. 132 implementations into practice were registered.
Achievements
For the last 10 years, employees of the department have been actively working in grant scientific and technical programs. For 2014-2016, the department completed a fragment of the scientific and technical progress “Improving technologies for protecting children’s health and reproductive health”(supervisorprof. E.Zh.Bekmukhambetov) on the topic: “Development and scientific justification of new technologies for protecting the health of newborn children” (supervisor Prof. B. Tusupkaliev and A.K. Zhumalina).
In 2017-2018 a fragment of the scientific and technical progress project was completed on the topic “Development of scientific and methodological foundations for minimizing the environmental load, medical care, social protection and improvement of the population of environmentally unfavorable territories of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”
In 2017-2018 STP “Development of scientific and methodological foundations of technology for assessing the health status of children and adolescents living in oil and gas regions of Western Kazakhstan” (Intra-university).
In 2019-2021 STP “Clinical and genetic markers of vitamin D status in newborns and young children in the Kazakh population” (Intra-university).
In 2021, the department’s initiative research work was completed on the topic “Development of methods for correcting environmentally determined disorders in children and adolescents living in oil and gas regions.” 2016-2021 State No. registration: 0115RK03030.

In 2022 “Clinical and genetic markers of bone metabolism in children of the Kazakh population” (Intra-University).
Currently, research work of the department “Development of an algorithm for follow-up observation and methods of rehabilitation of young children depending on gestational age and body weight” state registration No. 0121RKI0165 (2021-2023).
During the existence of the department, 4 doctoral dissertations, 7 candidate dissertations, 1 PhD doctoral dissertation, 2 master’s theses were defended. There are 18 innovative patents for inventions, 4 monographs have been published.
