Internship

The internship is a structural unit of the Dean’s Office of Postgraduate Education. Internship — improving the professional level and the degree of their readiness for independent medical activity; the duration of training is 2 years; after completion of training, a doctor’s qualification is awarded.

* The purpose of the internship is to meet the needs of university interns in deepening education after graduation, as well as to create favorable conditions for the training of a qualified specialist to work in medical institutions.

* The main objective of the internship is the timely, high-quality organization of the educational process aimed at implementing the program of clinical professional education and improving the practical training of graduates, improving their professional level and their degree of readiness for independent medical activity.

* There are state licenses for the right to conduct internship education in the specialty “General Medicine”.

* The previous level is Bachelor’s degree. Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree in General Medicine are accepted into the internship, in accordance with the transition score (GPA), according to the submitted applications, followed by an interview.

The internship educational program consists of 2 years (6-7 courses), each academic year of the internship consists of at least 60 credits;

Internship training of medical personnel is carried out at the university at specialized departments and at the PHC level under the guidance of clinical mentors. The integration of theory and practice in the training of interns is carried out in the 6th year, when interns master the main directions in the work of a general practitioner in specialized and related disciplines. Upon completion of the 6th year, an annual transfer certification is provided. The format of the transfer certification is discussed at a meeting of the University Board or the Academic Council of the university. Failure to comply with the conditions of transfer certification by an intern is a justification for re-mastering the 6th year.

Practice-oriented internship training is carried out in the final 7th year with the involvement of medical personnel (clinical mentors) in district, city, and regional polyclinics. Mastering the internship program in practical healthcare at the PHC level implements the dual principle in education – the place of mastering the practical part of the internship will be possible for a young specialist to work. At the place of practice of the 7th year, the intern shows medical and intellectual capabilities, which can serve as a foundation for his employment.

Practice-oriented training in the 7th year allows you to make a further choice as an intern: continue working as a general practitioner or become a candidate for postgraduate programs (residency, master’s degree).

The training is conducted at clinical bases:

• Medical Center of the University – Medical institutions of Aktobe (agreement between the University and clinics/hospitals of practical healthcare). Internship training is carried out in accordance with the state standard, the standard curriculum, work curricula, academic calendar, and the intern’s individual work plan. Interns during their studies, in addition to special disciplines, undergo related elective disciplines that are mandatory for study according to the standard program.
• Professors, associate professors, highly qualified teachers, as well as doctors with the highest medical category, heads of departments of clinical bases are involved in the training of interns.
• Types of knowledge control — examination, annual certification, final state certification.
• The final certification is carried out in 2 stages: testing and passing practical skills. The testing is conducted by the National Center for Independent Examination from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The structure of the internship educational program (credit technology) is formed according to a modular system of various types of educational and clinical work; the internship program includes basic disciplines, disciplines of the main component (profile and related profile), elective disciplines. The duration of the internship is 2 years – “General Medicine” (5 +2), at the end of the training, a certificate of completion of the internship of the state standard is issued, with the assignment of a doctor’s qualification in the specialty.

The main functions of the internship include:

• The Dean’s Office of Postgraduate Internship Education, together with specialized departments, provides admission and internship training for graduates of bachelor’s degree in medical schools, as well as determines the forms of training and control over the educational process of interns;
• Carries out the implementation of the work plan;
• Organizes and controls the quality of educational activities of departments that train interns;
• Organizes and improves the methodological work of departments that train interns;
• Analyzes the quality of training of internship graduates based on the results of their final certification;
• Provides admission to the internship;
• Organizes the reception of applicants’ documents for participation in the competition for admission to the internship;
• Monitors the implementation by departments of instructional documents on internship of higher departmental institutions, as well as prepares orders for the university, assists in the distribution of interns;
• Prepares proposals to the Academic Council, Vice-rectors and the Chairman of the Board- Rector of the University on improving educational, research, innovation, socio-educational, personnel policy;
• Participates in the organization and conduct of sports, cultural and mass work and leisure of interns.
