History of the creation of the department:

The department was founded in 1975. The first head of the Oncology Department of the Aktobe State Medical Institute was Candidate of Medical Sciences, ssociate Professor S.P. Samodurov, who is one of the oldest employees of the institute, with extensive clinical and teaching experience, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. From 1986 to 1995 and from 2002 to 2005, the department was headed by Professor A.E. Tuleuov, a graduate of the Aktobe State Medical Institute. From 1997 to 2002, the department was leaded by Doctor of Medical Sciences. Zh.A. Arzykulov, who defended his doctoral dissertation at the Russian Cancer Research Center named after. N.N. Blokhin. From 2005 to 2006, the chief of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences. R.K. Medeubaev.

From 2006 to 2007, the department was headed by Ph.D. Academy Professor V.I. Polyakov – a graduate of the Aktobe State Medical Institute. At one time, the department’s graduate students were: m.s.c. E.Zh. Bekmukhambetov, who currently are – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professors. From 2008 to the present, the department has been head by Ph.D. A.K. Koishybaev, one of the first clinical residents of the department, student of academician Arzykulov Zh.A

Goal: The goal of the Oncology Department is improving the quality of the educational process and the level of scientific research of thedepartment faculty, as well as medical work at the clinical base of the Medical Center of the West Kazakhstan Medical University named after Marat Ospanov.

Activity: Development and implementation of effective methods for diagnosing and treating malignant tumors. Within this topic, methods of treatment of malignant neoplasms of the esophagus, stomach, breast, colon, liver, pancreas and other localizations are being developed and implemented.

Achievements: Intra-university scientific research work from 2019-2021 on the topic: “Studying the prevalence and variability of germline mutations of the CDH1 gene in patients with gastric cancer in the context of a personalized approach to the choice of treatment tactics.” A scientific and technical project for 2021-2023 was alsoimplemented on the topic “Development of a Program for Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiotoxic Complications Caused by Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer” (IRN AP09259524) with grant funding from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The researchers of the department have published more than 500 scientific articles.

Oncology Department of WKMU named after M. Ospanov has close scientific connections with the Russian Oncological Research Center named after. N.N. Blokhin Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow and the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology in Almaty, with departments and scientific centers of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the countries of Commonwealth of Independent states.
